Sat 25th Jan 2025 - Yorkshire, Lancashire & Cheshire Border Terrier Club Open Show
Judge: Penny Sands (Krakensis)
Show Critique:
A warm welcome awaited me at the Yorkshire, Lancashire & Cheshire Border Terrier Club. Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to judge your winter open show at this suitable indoor venue. A small, but quality entry attended with very sporting exhibitors, great to hear such applause for the winners. On the plus side, I found good temperaments, pelts and coats although with Crufts only a few weeks away, some were obviously prepared with this show in mind. Perfect scissor bites were the order of the day but I was, however, quite surprised to find one exhibit with an inclining lower canine. A few exhibits lacked reach and drive rather than possess the effortless movement to enable a days work. I must apologise for the brief notes in Veteran as writing from memory, my technology failed at the last hurdle. And finally, thanks must also go to my very able steward, Karen Hurrion, for her assistance on the day.

1st - Chorbeck Phoenix Knight (Mrs H Haughton) nice head on this grizzle, good eye and ears, crisp jacket and a thick pelt. OK for topline and tailset and quite narrow all through. However, he’s a smidge up on the leg and a tad more depth than I would prefer but nevertheless, a handsome lad. Res BP

1st - Brumberhill Barnaby (Mr P Armstrong) Very smart b/t, this lad has neat ears, a moderately broad skull although to be picky, would prefer a shorter muzzle. He has a super outline. He’s easily spannable, great shoulders & topline and possesses the most super pelt & crisp coat. Moving off well on his muscular quarters he really impressed. Best Dog

1st - Fevstone Polar Ajax at Saxheath (Mrs A Heathcote). b/t who showed himself well, very attentive to his handler. Good width of skull, clean eye and moderate neck. Good for topline and tailset, OK for bone, although would prefer a stronger pastern.

1st - Goxfell Gotcha (Mrs J Stamp & Mr D Joyce) what a stunning g/t male, workmanlike and narrow all through plus balancing well. Cracking head, neat feet, moving accurately but unfortunately, just didn’t want to show off his virtues today, he looked quite unhappy.

1st - Tiny Tia Clootie Dumpling (Miss M Burrows) what a little sweetheart, everything in the right place for this 11 months pup. She has a cracking outline, super topline & tailset, nice straight legs and all topped off with a coat of correct texture. Best Puppy in show
Junior - Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 2
1st - Chorbeck Blue Velvet (Mrs H Haughton). This b/t youngster has a pleasing head, a good length to her body but a smidge up on the leg. She’s changing her jacket at the moment but a very attractive bitch all the same.

1st - Chorbeck Blue Velvet (Mrs H Haughton)
Post Graduate - Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 2
1st - Alcumlow Show And Tell At Riseburn (Miss C Tutin) she’s well made all through but would prefer a touch more depth to her muzzle. Good front and quarters with a firm topline and neat feet. She has a good thick pelt but rather naked at the moment. Very neat, moving well.
Limit - Bitch Entries: 7 Absentees: 3
1st - Otterbobs Beatrix JW (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin) my star of the day, this young lady simply shone. She is of an excellent size, outline and balance. With a dark eye and super expression, her head fits well on to her strong neck. She is narrow all through with a good length to her body, muscular quarters which she used on the move. Super pelt and harsh coat. I shall watch her progress with interest. BIS
2nd - Picer Mirabel Ostler (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering) another lovely bitch with a flowing outline. This b/t really took my eye, in good jacket and so well presented. She has a pleasing head with neat ears, super bone, shapely quarters and neat feet. Moving well, accurately, but would prefer a smidge harder musculature.
3rd - Stineval Sasha JW (Mr A & Mrs C Horner) Up on her toes, this g/t appealed as of a similar type to 2. Feminine but with strength, she has an attractive head. Very neat and shapely all through and a super shape to her tail, just not the front movement of 1 & 2.
Res - Fevstone Rosie Posie (Ms M Masefield)
Open - Bitch Entries: 7 Absentees: 4
The most difficult class of the day
1st - Ir CH Nottorg Nekesa CW24 (Mrs A Taylor)a good overall shape to this workmanlike grizzle bitch. She has a beautiful head with a strong muzzle, straight front and stands on good legs. Nice jacket and pelt. Easily spannable, good bodylines and tail. Res BB.
2nd - Mysulan Rhapsody In Blue (Mrs S J Baxter) lighter in bone, this b/t has a well-shaped head with a dark eye and neat ears. She has a straight front and is spannable. She is longer in the back than some, still holds her topline on the move but would prefer a more positive stride.
3rd - Good Golly Miss Molly At Martifers (Mr M & Mrs J Sharp) This b/t was the best mover in the class but deep in the chest so difficult to span. Good breadth of skull, just a tad long in the muzzle.

2nd - Lynsett Lewis (Mr P Armstrong) a pleasing outline on this rising 9 years b/t, he’s all of a piece and moving well. Good pelt and jacket.
3rd - Mysulan Easy Ryder (Mr B Jepson) a good head and eye on this 7yrs b/t, handy size but just not the movement of 1 & 2.
